Shortlisted for the 2025 European Union Prize for Literature

Michalis Crocos is a unique man. On a hot day in early summer, as he tries to write his next book, he receives an unusual visit. In order to save a friend, he infiltrates an alt right organization as a copywriter and wanders around the Athenian center of tourism and gentrification, realizing that things have now changed.

I had to write a wrong novel. The narrator drags the hero through all the dead ends, all the mistakes, he describes them wrongly on top, misjudges his time, all the situations, and in the end the hero dies because nothing else can be done. And the narrator dies too. Everyone. They all die horribly, the wrong novel is forgotten, and years later another narrator finds it in a basket. It now costs half a dollar, but he doesn’t even buy it.

Makis Malafekas was born in 1977 in Athens. He studied art history and social anthropology. He presented seminars in Sorbonne on the history of European comics, and worked at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He has published articles in Libération (France), Lifo (Greece) and other magazines. Deepfake is his third novel. He lives and works between Brussels and Athens.
