DEADLINES FOR APPLICATION AND ASSESSMENT
Twice a year: 20 January, 20 May
Applicants may submit up to three (3) applications in each of the two (2) assessment periods.
Sample translation grant
- The translation of a work sample aims to promote Greek works in order to attract interest in their full translation.
- The call for proposals to receive a grant for translating into a foreign language part of a work written in Greek is accompanied by a relevant application form submitted electronically.
- The call is addressed to domestic legal entities under public and private law, whether for-profit or non-profit such as educational institutions, universities, publishing companies, as well as to natural persons, such as authors, translators or literary agents, provided that they have already a licence agreement for the use of the extract in question with the holder of the copyright and property rights of the work.
- The length of the sample to be translated for literary works (including poetry and children’s literature) of more than 100 pages may be between 10 and 20 pages of 1800 characters per page.
- The same applies to the length of the sample to be translated for essays of more than 100 pages.
- For literary works (including poetry and children’s literature) and essays up to 100 pages, the sample submitted must cover 10% of the total number of pages of the Greek edition.
Criteria
- The quality of the original work.
- The quality of the translator’s work.
- The reasons for the particular selection.
- Whether the original book has been awarded the State Prize for Literature or other prizes.
- The promotion of new or emerging authors.
- The impact of the author’s work abroad.
- The promotion of the Greek language and book production internationally.
Grant amount and procedure
THE GRANT FOR A SAMPLE WORK TRANSLATION IS 500 EUROS
The translation sample must be delivered within two (2) months from the date of signing the relevant agreement with HFBC and the grant shall be paid upon delivery of the sample.
The Committee’s decisions must be communicated to the applicants within six (5) weeks of the deadline for the submission of applications.
The signing of a relevant agreement between the successful applicants and HFBC must be completed within six (6) weeks of the announcement of the positive assessments and the Committee’s decisions, the content of which is fully binding on the Board of HFBC and is governed by Law no. 4412/2016 (Government Gazette A 147/8-8-16), as amended and in force.
