In the Time of the Plague

In the Time of the Plague. Epidemics in Antiquity that defied any reason
Stefanos Paraskevaidis
Crete University Press, 2023

State Prize for the Translation of Ancient Greek Literature in Modern Greek

This text is a rich collection that explores, from various perspectives, the impact of epidemics on ancient societies. The urgent and unusual circumstances of deadly epidemics created dynamics that shaped ideas and perceptions, fostered new habits, and influenced all areas of human activity. In light of our recent pandemic experience, these texts feel particularly relevant today, posing problems and questions that modern readers have faced themselves. As a result, people from ancient times may seem less distant and more relatable—just as human and frightened as we are.
