Niki
Through the story of a family, there is the depiction of the political and social atmosphere of the country during the first half of the 20th century and the years after the Greek Civil War. In this historical background, the first-person narration of Niki (the writer’s mother) illuminates the life of her parents as well as the life of their families. The couple, the one coming from Asia Minor and the other from Messenia, join the Left in decades during which the “millstones” of Greek History grind incessantly: their daughter, even when she is a few months old, experiences imprisonment, hiding and exile. She grows up with two parents that are heroes, she sees her father being elected a member of the parliament, imprisoned during the dictatorship, betrayed by his fellow comrades, turn criminal until the restoration of his reputation. Niki –a name-wish for the eventual prevalence of Good– will deny the role of martyr and the heavy armor of her ideology, when she falls in love, contrary to everyone’s will, with a man who wants to live in his own way. The writer reintroduces, in a fictional way, almost half a century of Greek reality through everyday snapshots of a family life.
